Pivô Pesquisa – Performative Practices, held in partnership with iBT – Instituto Brasileiro de Teatro, launches the 2026 Study Program on September 3, Thursday, with a conversation with writer and journalist Marilene Felinto at 7pm. The free and open-to-the-public conversation takes place at iBT (Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio, 277).
The conversation draws from the writer’s work and trajectory, focusing particularly on the books “As mulheres de Tijucopapo” (1982) and “Corsária” (2025). Mediated by choreographer and playwright Carolina Mendonça, the conversation examines a form of writing in which language always seems foreign, fiction is the closest one can come to history, and family appears in all its rawness and complexity.
Bringing literature and performative arts into dialogue, the conversation proposes thinking about writing as a practice: how is a singular language constructed? What times, tools and conditions make it possible to sustain an artistic trajectory over decades, beyond the more immediate rhythms of visibility and circulation? The conversation will be a space for listening to how Felinto develops different relationships with writing, research and artistic practice.

Marilene Felinto is a writer, journalist, and translator. Born in Recife, she grew up in São Paulo, where she moved with her family at the age of 11. She holds a degree in Portuguese and English from the University of São Paulo and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from PUC São Paulo.
In 1983, she received the Jabuti Prize in the Revelation category for her novel As Mulheres de Tijucopapo (1982), currently in its fifth edition (Ubu, 2021), which has been translated into English, French, Dutch, and Catalan. Her most recent novel, Corsária (Fósforo, 2025), received the 2025 Best Novel award from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA).
She is the author of ten other books, including novels, short stories, articles, and essays, among them the short-story collection Mulher Feita (Fósforo, 2022). She also translates from English into Portuguese, with translations of authors including Virginia Woolf, Joseph Conrad, Thomas Wolfe, Charles Bukowski, and Malcolm X, among others.
As a visiting writer, she has taught courses and given lectures at universities and literature festivals in the United States, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Portugal. She was a guest writer at the International Literary Festival of Paraty in 2019. She has written as a columnist for press outlets since the 1990s and currently writes for the São Paulo-based digital magazine Gama Revista.
