Invited by Pivô to celebrate the institution’s tenth anniversary, artists Sonia Gomes and Juliana dos Santos produced a series of new works together.
Juliana dos Santos has been working for two years as an assistant at Sonia Gomes’ studio, where they have established ongoing intellectual and affective exchanges. The artists worked collaboratively for the first time. The works on view are the outcome of combining two poetic work processes that start from very different premises and now arrive in a new and surprising common ground.

Gomes’ work starts from handling found materials and second-hand textiles that often carry an affective memory or convey personal stories from acquaintances and strangers. Santos’ recent work, on the other hand, starts from a long conceptual investigation on the material, sensorial and aesthetic properties of the color blue, taking a flower, the Clitorhea Ternatia, as a research trigger to new materiality and supports.
The basis of the sculptural works on view is a series of printed fabrics with paintings by Juliana dos Santos, produced with KALIMO’s support. The long strips of fabric informed the shapes and turns of the joint venture carried on in Gomes’studio. The mutual respect and care and the challenges of the process were documented in a film directed by Pedro Marques. He visited the studio several times and conducted interviews with the artists together with Pivô’s artistic director Fernanda Brenner.
Promoting generational exchanges has always been one of Pivô’s premises. Enabling a project bringing together two Brazilian artists with an almost forty-year-age gap in an affective and experimental process translates Pivô’s values and institutional mission in the past decade.
