Argos, instituição cultural localizada em Bruxelas (Bélgica), recebe a mostra Oriana, itinerância da mostra homônima, realizada no Pivô em 2021.
In the past months, Fernanda Brenner, artistic director of Pivô, and Niels Van Tomme, curator of argos, have collaborated with Santiago Munõz on creating a new installation-version of Oriana, the artist’s first feature-length film from 2022. After an initial presentation at Pivô in Sao Paulo, Santiago Munõz shot extra scenes and these were added to the original material, creating an intricate audiovisual experience across the two floors of the argos building.
Oriana is based on feminist writer Monique Wittig’s revolutionary 1969 novel Les Guérillères, in which heteronormative gender roles are rejected by using a newly created grammar that challenges conventional binary arrangements. Santiago Muñoz’s free and procedural reinterpretation of Les Guérillères transposes Wittig’s remarkable linguistic inventions into an equally unconventional filmic structure.
Filled with inexplicable encounters between subjects and objects, Orianaun folds across forests, caves, rivers, and the ruins of industrial and colonial infrastructures. Everyday objects turn into mysterious assault weapons, while ancestral spirits and the recently deceased hauntingly pervade the filmic space.
Beatriz Santiago Muñoz: Oriana is co-curated by Fernanda Brenner and Niels Van Tomme. It is a collaboration between ⒜⒭⒢⒪⒮ and Pivô in São Paulo, Brazil. With promotional support by Brussels Independent Film Festival.
