Beta-Local presents Disobedient Soup in Amsterdam, in partnership with Pivô and Hartwig Art Foundation

The Puerto Rican art collective Beta-Local, in partnership with Pivô and Hartwig Art Foundation, presented Disobedient Soup on September 18, 19, and 20 in Amsterdam, at Hartwig Proxy. Developed as an artistic methodology, Disobedient Soup unfolded over three days of fermentation, preparation, and digestion — both literally and metaphorically — bringing flavors, memories, and forms to Amsterdam.

The artistic activation is an expansion of Transmigração, an exhibition held at Pivô Boulevard in September 2025 by Beta-Local in partnership with OtherNetwork and ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen. At the time, the collective presented Sopa de Rumores at the exhibition’s opening.

For Disobedient Soup, the proposal was to create an opportunity for exchange around decolonial artistic practices that moves beyond external observation, establishing horizontal dialogues with local curators, researchers, and cultural practitioners. The space featured photographs by Jochi Melero: the artist transformed the cooking pot used during the first stage of Sopa de Rumores into a pinhole camera to produce portraits of members of Amsterdam’s Caribbean and African diaspora communities.

On Friday, September 18, 2026, from 5 to 7 pm, “Fermentation: Pique-Making Workshop” took place, led by Beta-Local with the participation of artist Razia Bersatie, followed by a storytelling session with Paul Middelijn. On Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 2 to 7 pm, “Preparation: Disobedient Soup” took place, featuring a Yamming Session with Fabían Vélez and a performance by MIMA, accompanied by Lizmarie Torres Rodríguez. Closing the program, on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 3 to 5 pm, everyone was invited to an open and reflective conversation, accompanied by cocktails prepared by Samuel Kingue Ebelle.

The project began in June, when Beta-Local presented Full Moon, Food and Freedom on the eve of Keti Koti, a date marking the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the former Dutch colonies in the Caribbean. The event reflected on how culinary traditions carry histories of resistance, migration, and connection across the Caribbean diaspora.

The event also featured KIP Republic (Netherlands/USA) and Pivô’s artistic director, Fernanda Brenner, in a conversation about the intersections of art, territory, and community, reflecting on food as a tool for gathering, memory, and collective making.
