Caruru do Pivô Boulevard Celebrates Pivô’s 15th Anniversary and Three Years in Salvador

Pivô Boulevard will hold the fourth edition of its traditional Caruru do Pivô Boulevard on September 4 and 5. This year, the celebration brings together three milestones in the institution’s trajectory: Pivô’s 15th anniversary, three years of activity in Salvador, and the 15th Annual Pivô Auction.

With a free program, the weekend will feature a collective okra-cutting gathering, artistic actions, music, and the offering of caruru prepared by Mãe Cida de Nanã, Iyá Egbé of Ilê Asipá. On Saturday, the program will take place alongside the Annual Auction, held in São Paulo and broadcast live at Pivô Boulevard.

The program begins on Friday, September 4, from 3pm to 6pm, with the collective okra-cutting gathering led by Ekedi Sandra de Omolu. The action revisits the collective nature of the preparations that precede the offering of caruru, making the shared act of preparation part of the celebration itself.

Throughout the afternoon, curator and researcher Anne Rodrigues will present a musical selection specially prepared for the occasion. With a degree in History from UNEB, Rodrigues conducts research at the intersection of history, music, and politics, with a focus on musical movements formed across the African diaspora.

On Saturday, September 5, Pivô Boulevard will open its doors from 12pm with an artistic action by the Alabês Asipá — Mateus Asipá, Filipe Asipá, and Alexandre Asipá — who will play the atabaques as part of a welcome action for the public. Following the opening of the house to the sound of the alabês’ atabaques, there will be a special acoustic performance by Genaldo Novaes on guitar and Tonynho dos Santos on saxophone, founders and members of the Afro-urban Bahian band DNA Urbano, whose repertoire brings together references from African-rooted cultures with sounds such as ijexá, jazz, rock, samba, and funk. The caruru will then be served, accompanied by a musical selection by Anne Rodrigues. From 2pm to 4pm, Piaba – Children’s Samba Circle will take over the house with a samba circle for children and adults.

The Caruru do Pivô Boulevard, prepared by Mãe Cida de Nanã, will then be served. Anne Rodrigues will once again accompany the program with a musical selection and, from 2pm to 4pm, Piaba – Children’s Samba Circle will take over the house with a performance for children and adults.

Led by Júlia Maia on vocals, Jalmy on vocals and seven-string guitar, and a band, Piaba is a children’s samba circle that celebrates childhood through Brazilian music. Featuring children’s songs from different periods reimagined through the language of the roda, the project offers an affective and collective musical experience, bringing different generations closer to the richness, diversity, and ancestral traditions of samba.

At 4pm, the public will be able to follow the live broadcast of the 15th Annual Pivô Auction at Pivô Boulevard, directly from Pivô Copan in São Paulo. The 2026 edition brings together more than 100 artists from different generations and is part of the celebrations marking the institution’s 15th anniversary.

ABOUT CARURU DO PIVÔ BOULEVARD

Held annually since Pivô’s arrival in Salvador, the caruru has become part of the institution’s program, drawing on a tradition deeply rooted in Bahia that was already practiced at the house on Boulevard Suíço.

September is dedicated to celebrations honoring São Cosme, São Damião, and the Ibejis. Through the act of preparing and offering caruru, dimensions of celebration, sharing, protection, and the strengthening of community bonds come together.

The celebration takes place in a historic house whose story has been shaped by encounters between art, food, and conviviality. Built in 1934 and designed by Bahian painter Presciliano Silva and architect Lycério Schreiner, the house hosted literary gatherings, carnivals, and meetings among artists and intellectuals over the decades. In the 1960s, it also became a meeting place for figures connected to Tropicália and Cinema Novo.

At the time, gatherings held at the house were accompanied by macrobiotic soup prepared by Maria Moniz, Presciliano’s daughter. Since 2023, when Pivô began occupying the house, this history has continued through artistic residencies, exhibitions, public programs, and encounters bringing together artists, researchers, partners, and local and international audiences.

15 YEARS OF PIVÔ

The 2026 edition of Caruru do Pivô Boulevard marks three years of the institution’s presence in Salvador and is also part of the celebrations of Pivô’s 15th anniversary.

Founded in São Paulo in 2011, the institution is dedicated to artistic exchange, research, and experimentation through exhibitions, residencies, commissioned projects, publications, and public programs. The opening of Pivô Boulevard in 2023 expanded this work to Salvador and initiated a process of building new networks and exchanges between different territories.

The 15th-anniversary celebrations also coincide with the 15th Annual Pivô Auction, held from August 29 to September 13. On Saturday, beginning at 4pm, the auction taking place in São Paulo will be broadcast live at Pivô Boulevard, bringing the institution’s two locations closer together.

The relationship between the auction and the caruru thus represents two distinct practices that have accompanied Pivô’s trajectory: on the one hand, a network built around support for artistic production; on the other, the sharing of food as a gesture of encounter and the strengthening of bonds.
