J. Melo presents residency project at Pivô Boulevard on Public Program
On Wednesday, July 29, at 5pm, artist J. Melo will presented a Public Program, marking the conclusion of his residency at Pivô Boulevard. During the event, he shared the project developed through the Ilé Wa Residency, operated by the Cambará Institute at Pivô Boulevard.
At 6pm, J. Melo presented the project in a conversation moderated by architect and urban planner Vilma Patrícia, Director of Research and Extension at the Cambará Institute. The discussion also featured architects Kaísa Isabel and Audrey Carolini, members of the Cambará team.
Over the past month, J. Melo has explored sustainable materials and ancestral knowledge through a residency in which architectural practice intersected with political and historical reflection. Through ongoing immersions in the city and mentorship from researchers and curators, the residency foregrounded Afro-Brazilian narratives.
Drawing on the mentorship provided by Cambará and on field research carried out in Salvador, particularly during the celebrations honoring the Caboclos as part of Bahia Independence Day on July 2, J. Melo developed the project Pavilion of Independence. The proposal takes earth and clay as its starting point, understanding them as materials that connect Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian peoples and that are central to the artist’s ceramic practice. Challenging the conventional structure of exhibition pavilions and architecture, the project proposes clay columns that function as platforms for works by other artists, especially ceramic practitioners.
The residency was organized by the Cambará Institute for the Promotion of Afro-Brazilian Architecture in partnership with Pivô. J. Melo was selected through an open call for Black architecture professionals living in Bahia. The residency is supported by the rearc institute.
