Pivô is a non-profit art space providing a platform for exchange, critical thinking and artistic experimentation inside one of São Paulo’s most iconic modernist buildings, the Copan, projected by Oscar Niemeyer in the city’s central area. Since its inception, in 2012, the institution has enabled and facilitated projects by over two hundred artists and curators both local and international and in all career stages.

Its program is comprised by temporary exhibitions, new commissions, residencies, publications as well as discursive educational public programming, fostering a critical understanding of local and international most pressing issues in art and society. Our core mission is to create growing networks of exchange between artistic and cultural practitioners from different contexts and to provide an active meeting point for an emerging art scene in São Paulo.

Pivô’s activities are made possible through the generous support of a network of corporate and private sponsors and the remaining essential funding comes from grants, special editions developed by the artist in the program and its annual fundraising auction and benefit.

Pivô firma parceria com Yes I Am Jeans em Aparamento, projeto produzido para a SP–Arte 2023

Aparamento is a word meaning ornament in Portuguese, something used in decorations. This term is common in sacred contexts where the adornment is a crucial element for rituals. In 2023, we have invited eight artists to ornament clothes in a way their works inhabit a space between fashion design and visual arts.

To conduct this project, Pivô (a nonprofit cultural institution situated in the Copan building) has established an unprecedented partnership with the Brazilian brand Yes I Am Jeans. The brand is known for its commitment to sustainability and diversity, it has produced clothes with recyclable and organic materials, besides its engagement to modeling in a way it can valorize different body types.

Clothes pieces work as blank canvases waiting for interventions by Adriano Costa, Alexandre dos Anjos,Caroline Ricca Lee, Felipe Rezende, Igi Ayedun, Rafael Bqueer, Randolpho Lamonier, and Yuli Yamagata. There is no idea of collection to guide their production: each artist has total poetic freedom to make their artworks now assembled and showcased at SP-Arte’s space.

In addition to his own intervention on a clothing piece, Alexandre dos Anjos signs the curating of the project with Pivô, and a series of pants he created. Dos Anjos is a visual artist, fashion and costume designer. His research is interfacing art, fashion, and the idea of resistance: clothes are understood as a canvas working by and for dissident bodies that are getting ready to fight and to party.

The basis for Aparamento to invite artists is the comprehension that  fashion design can be a means of expression and a cultural manifestation, as well as the visual arts; and that the body is an element promoting the displacement of art from an intellectual realm to the sphere of creation and participation.
