Pivô Pesquisa launches open call for performance-based residencies in partnership with iBT – Brazilian Institute of Theatre
Starting on June 11 (Thursday), applications will open for Pivô Pesquisa 2026 – Performative Practices. For the first time, Pivô Copan’s artistic residency program will host an edition dedicated to performative practices, expanding its scope to welcome artists whose primary medium of inquiry is the body.
Held in partnership with the iBT – Brazilian Institute of Theatre, this edition is aimed at artists interested in developing and/or deepening a research project within the expanded field, including languages such as dance, performance, theatre, and choreography. Through an open call via online application form, four proposals by individual artists or artist-researcher duos with at least 3 (three) years of experience and professional practice, residing in Brazil’s Central-West, North, Northeast, and South regions, will be selected.
The residency will take place from August 31 to December 6, 2026. Applications may be submitted until July 3, and results will be announced on July 30. The program proposes a period of shared research, creating conditions for artists at different moments in their trajectories to deepen questions, shift creative habits, and accompany one another’s processes. The residency is conceived as a period of suspension from the urgencies of everyday production, allowing participants to temporarily withdraw and listen more closely to what persists.
Selected artists will have access to iBT – Brazilian Institute of Theatre’s rehearsal studios to develop their research and projects throughout the residency. In addition, they may participate in educational activities that are part of the Pivô Pesquisa program and the program of the iBT Rehearsal Room Occupation, an initiative carried out by the institute in parallel with Pivô Pesquisa. The iBT program selects independent performing arts artists and collectives interested in occupying its rehearsal spaces and developing creative processes.
Although they share the same timeframe and institutional space, Pivô Pesquisa and the iBT Rehearsal Room Occupation are independent programs, with distinct objectives, selection criteria, mentoring structures, and dynamics. At the same time, the proximity between the initiatives creates opportunities for points of encounter across their programming. Throughout the residency, open activities and moments of exchange may be promoted between participants of both programs, announced in advance to residents.
In addition to participating in an opening class, artists selected for Pivô Pesquisa will be invited, at the end of the residency, to take part in Occupation in Exhibition, a public gathering for sharing processes held in dialogue with participants from both programs. The activity proposes a space for presentation and exchange around the research developed throughout the residency period.
The partnership between Pivô and iBT brings together two institutions interested in thinking about art beyond conventional formats of production and presentation. By bringing together experiences connected to performance, theatre, choreography, and transdisciplinary practices, the program seeks to create a research ecology capable of expanding perspectives on the body. Curatorial coordination of Pivô Pesquisa 2026 will be led by Carolina Mendonça, choreographer and dramaturge, in collaboration with the Pivô team.
