PIVÔ RECEIVES: Gabinete de Investigação de Desenho (GID) presents workshop with Iansã Negrão, Lia Cunha and Pedro Alban on July 16 and 17

Pivô Boulevard welcomes the workshop Correspondentes Postais Brasil–Japão (Brazil–Japan Postal Correspondence) on July 16 and 17, proposed by the Gabinete de Investigação de Desenho (GID). Led by artists Iansã Negrão, Lia Cunha and Pedro Alban, the activity is free and open to the public. Registration is available via an online form.

The workshop is part of a series of activities developed by the artists in the cities of Osaka and Okayama, Japan, during May and June this year, as part of the Cultural Mobility Grant. The project is coordinated and produced by Flotar, managed by Omi Plataforma, with local support from Kowada Plataforma, and curated by Juci Reis and Natsuko Okazaki.

During the workshop, participants will be invited to create visual responses to the message-memories produced in Japan, continuing this poetic correspondence. Activities will unfold through rituals, exercises and experimental propositions developed by GID. The event will also feature a culinary activation by Gyo.zas, a project by Cacá Faria, presenting handmade Asian-Bahian cuisine prepared at a slow pace.

In Japan, the research took the postcard as a device for international communication and the construction of affective archives and shared memories. Within this context, different poetic approaches emerged: Iansã’s “draw like crazy,” Pedro Alban’s postcards documenting nonexistent buildings, and Lia Cunha’s “Sambaqui” postcards. The workshops held in Japan also engaged with the tradition of etegami (illustrated letter postcards), creating a space for exchange between Brazilian and Japanese memories.

The Gabinete de Investigação de Desenho (GID) is a project conceived by artists Lia Cunha and Iansã Negrão that proposes an experimental and sensorial approach to drawing, breaking away from academic conventions and traditional techniques. Inspired by the idea of “letting go of fear” (Roupa Nova, 1983) and Peter Jenny’s provocation in Drawing Techniques (2014), GID encourages a free practice in which “mistakes” are understood as an essential part of the creative process.

Between 2024 and 2025, GID held workshops in Salvador, Bahia, collaborating with artists such as Mestre J. Cunha and partnering with institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art of Bahia (MAC_BAHIA), Festival Paisagem Sonora, Puño Oficina de Arte and the Alliance Française.
