Pivô Satélite launches edition #8 in June with audiovisual works presented at the Copan and on an online platform

Pivô Satélite, the institution’s audiovisual experimentation program running since 2020, presents its new edition starting on June 23. For one month, Satélite #8 occupies the storefront window of Pivô Copan, in São Paulo, with a video installation presented alongside the exhibition on the digital platform (pivo.org.br/satelite), where all works will be available online and free of charge.

Conceived in partnership with Persona Curada, a nomadic Latin American contemporary art organization, this edition highlights video works developed at Pivô through exchanges with artists from the Latin American diaspora in Europe, whose interdisciplinary practices create experimental interfaces between artistic creation and research in Brazil and Latin America within the global contemporary art scene.

Curated by Pedro Azevedo in collaboration with Noélia Portela, Satélite #8 brings together commissioned works produced in the context of programs developed at Pivô over the last 15 years in dialogue with a selection of films by artists collaborating with Persona Curada.

Taking audiovisual work as a temporary manifestation of artistic practices shaped by distinct research methodologies, the body of works presented offers a perspective aligned with Pivô’s institutional mission as a hub for creation and experimentation in contemporary art, and with Persona Curada’s mission as a nomadic curatorial platform.

The emphasis on the process-based, methodological, and speculative character of this selection creates connections between artists whose investigations engage with diverse materialities while frequently destabilizing traditional forms of moving image through intersections with sound, performance, animation, and digital culture.

By approaching the program as a continuous and open laboratory in which investigations into image, new media, and curatorial thinking take virtual form, partnerships with initiatives such as Persona Curada strengthen and expand the ways contemporary artistic practices developed by Pivô over the past 15 years are produced and exhibited.

Held since 2020, Pivô Satélite is a digital platform dedicated to creation and experimentation in the field of moving image, conceived as a space for research, curating, and production of audiovisual works designed for both online and physical environments. More than a dissemination channel, Satélite functions as a laboratory for formats, languages, and modes of circulation of contemporary audiovisual practices, connecting artists and audiences in Brazil and abroad while expanding possibilities of access and visibility.

Starring the artist herself, the work is a metalinguistic audiovisual fiction layered with editing, animation, and special effects. In a visually psychedelic narrative driven by absurd humor, the protagonist wanders through an art gallery while preparing to shoot a feature film about a giant sexual worm. As the narrative unfolds, space and her own body begin to merge and disintegrate.

Set in the Atacama Desert, the video unfolds as a sensory immersion with a ritualistic atmosphere, developed through techniques of digital ultra-processing, filters, and effects. At the threshold between myth, ancestry, and technology, the work presents a performance mediated by technological tools, offering a provocative perspective on the connection between all human and non-human beings and their ancestors throughout history.

Developed from research into the territorial dispute along the border between Ceará and Piauí, the film speculates on images of experimental migrations, simultaneous existences, and anomalous landscapes. This fracture and struggle for power, originating in the colonial period, is renewed through the promise of the Transnordestina railway and remains in a constant state of survival, transformation, and adaptation.

Maya Quilolo opens this experimental video performance by stating: The world ended when the earth-digging monsters exploded its reptilian magma womb. Composed of archival images that evoke both the past and present of colonial violence against the land, the work is haunted by the artist’s appearance as she narrates and overlays her own body onto the screen.

Time Capsule
Denise Agassi
27’14’’ | Brazil | 2021

Like a meditation exercise guided by the artist’s voice, the work proposes an experience of networked breathing based on conscious engagement with flows of information and memory, encouraging the production of mental images. Through a time capsule, participants are invited to create sensitive connections between the cosmos of networks and the multiple layers of the body.

Composed in three sound channels, the work reverberates Celestino’s mental landscape concerning dependency, institutional fragility, lack of reparation, collective memory, trauma, and cultural and artistic trends of the 2000s, appropriating the lyrics of Bring Me to Life, the Evanescence classic.

The work was commissioned by Expedition, Liste Art Fair Basel’s online program, as part of the project As We Leave the Window Open, and received the Ducato Prize 2023.

Pinocchia tales
R. Moreno
Photographic installation | Colombia | 2024

The sculptures in Pinocchia investigate debt as a multidimensional condition (economic, social, and symbolic). Through feminized reinterpretations of figures such as Pinocchio and Frankenstein, created from everyday environments and consumer goods, the works examine how systems of obligation structure interpersonal relationships and condition embodied experiences in urban public space.
