Pivô is an autonomous contemporary art platform founded in 2011, opened to the public in 2012, dedicated to artistic exchange, research, and experimentation. At its core, the institution seeks to reflect on artistic practice and advance its understanding as a distinct form of thought and active participation in visual culture, society, and politics—operating as a space for proposing, investigating, exploring, and experimenting. This purpose unfolds through an ongoing program that includes commissioned projects, exhibitions, artist residencies, publications, and public programs, creating conditions for the creation and circulation of ideas in direct collaboration with artists, curators, and publics, both nationally and internationally.

Pivô Copan, the institution’s first venue, is housed within the iconic Copan building in downtown São Paulo, where it has consolidated this experimental and collaborative approach. In 2023, Pivô inaugurated its second venue in Salvador: Pivô Boulevard, situated in the historic Suíço Boulevard mansion, a former gathering place for movements such as Tropicália and Cinema Novo. This multidisciplinary platform reinforces the institution’s commitment to decentralization and the development of cultural networks in dialogue with diverse contexts.

The expansion in Salvador will continue with the opening of Pivô Coaty on Ladeira da Misericórdia, occupying buildings designed by Lina Bo Bardi and João Filgueiras Lima. Across all three venues, Pivô shares a desire to occupy and reclaim historically significant locations, transforming them into vibrant cultural centers that foster artistic dialogue and community engagement. This new chapter reaffirms the commitment to circulating situated knowledge and building diverse cultural ecosystems.

Today, Pivô operates as a network, privileging movement over stability through dynamics of exchange that value differences and specificities. More than physical spaces, it constitutes a dynamic field of artistic dialogue and ongoing investigation that has already welcomed hundreds of artists at different moments in their trajectories.

Pivô Satélite launches edition #8 in June with audiovisual works presented at the Copan and on an online platform

Pivô Satélite, the institution’s program dedicated to audiovisual experimentation since 2020, presents its new edition starting on June 23. For one month, Satélite #8 occupies the storefront of Pivô Copan, in São Paulo, with a video installation presented alongside an exhibition on the digital platform (pivo.org.br/satelite), where all works are available online free of charge.

Conceived in partnership with the itinerant Latin American contemporary art organization Persona Curada, this edition highlights video productions developed at Pivô in exchange with artists from the Latin American diaspora in Europe, whose interdisciplinary practices open experimental interfaces between artistic creation and research in Brazil and Latin America within the global contemporary art scene.

Curated by Pedro Azevedo in collaboration with Noélia Portela, Satélite #8 brings together commissioned works and productions developed within the context of programs carried out by Pivô over the past 15 years, in dialogue with a selection of films by artists affiliated with Persona Curada.

Considering audiovisual work as a provisional manifestation of artistic practices shaped by distinct research methodologies, the body of works presented in the program offers a perspective aligned with the institutional missions of Pivô as a hub for creation and experimentation in contemporary art, and of Persona Curada as a nomadic curatorial platform.

The emphasis on the processual, methodological, and speculative nature of this selection brings together practitioners whose investigations engage with diverse materialities, while frequently destabilizing traditional forms of the moving image through exchanges with sound, performance, animation, and digital culture.

By approaching the program as a continuous and open laboratory, in which investigations into image-making, new media, and curatorial thinking take shape both virtually and physically, partnerships with initiatives such as Persona Curada gain strength in multiplying the ways contemporary practices developed by Pivô over the past 15 years can be produced and exhibited.

Established in 2020, Pivô Satélite is a digital platform dedicated to creation and experimentation in the field of moving images, conceived as a space for research, curatorship, and the production of audiovisual works designed for both online and physical environments. More than a dissemination channel, Satélite functions as a laboratory for formats, languages, and modes of circulation within contemporary audiovisual practices, connecting artists and audiences in Brazil and abroad while expanding possibilities for access to and visibility of the works.
