Abiniel João Nascimento

1996, lives and works at Pernambuco, Brazil

Multi-platform artist, Abiniel João Nascimento (Carpina, Pernambico, Brazil, 1996) is a researcher; he holds a bachelor’s in museology (UFPE, 2022). Member of the Collective of Black and Indigenous Art – CARNI and the research group DesAyiê : colonial wound and dissolution of worlds. He is interested in how the material and immaterial conjunctions structured based on Brazilian social micro and macro-relations make up the imaginary. The artist starts from a perspective that is methodologically based on what he calls the Relation of Coloniality, composed of the Archival Relation and the Land Relation (RC = RA + RT). In other words, his research seeks to experience the encounters between spirituality, territoriality, and corporeality (RT) as setbacks to the colonial archive (RA), constituting and maintaining the complexities of existences fringed by coloniality.

The artist was awarded in the VI FUNDAJ Artistic Residencies Competition with the research and individual exhibition ‘Aceiro’ (2022); he was also selected in the cross-residency Nantes-Recife, based in Galerie Paradise (Nantes – FR, 2022) where he held his second individual exhibition ‘Além. Here. Here.’. He participated in the shows RAIO A RAIO (2022) at MAM – RJ and the exhibition AFLUENTE at Art Rio (2021) with Solar dos Abacaxis; of the show VERBO – Mostra de Performance Arte (2022); also signed the curatorship of the exhibition ‘Hoje somos muitas árvores’ (2021) and participated as a speaker at the seminar ‘Boca de mundos (La bouche des mondes)’ at YGREC – Centre d’art de l’École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy (2022), besides national and international film shows with films and formative workshops.

In his residency period, the artist received support from the performance space Casa Líquida.
