Cristiano Lenhardt

1975, in Recife

The work of Cristiano Lenhardt explores the narratives that intertwine pop culture and mass culture, the construction of myths and legends and a reflection on the ways that human beings, animals and objects relate to one another. His practice does not privilege one medium above another but rather encompasses film, performance, installation, sculpture, photography, drawing and engraving. The artist creates pieces that reference different sources, including folklore, art history, fantastical literature and science fiction, letting his research be guided not by pre-established concept but by a series of exercises in writing, drawing and the manipulation of materials of different origins – found items, both organic and inorganic, discarded elements, raw materials that come from other objects – which are gradually shaped, assembled, folded and brought to life.   Main group shows: 36o Panorama da Arte Brasileira, 32a Bienal de São Paulo, São Paulo (2016), Bienal Naifs do Brasil, Piracicaba (2016), Soft Power, Kunsthal KadE, Amersfoort (2016), 19o Festival de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_Videobrasil, Panoramas do Sul, Galpão VB, São Paulo (2015), 5o Prêmio CNI SESI Marcantônio Vilaça, MAC-USP - Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo (2015), Cruzamentos: Contemporary Art in Brazil, Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio (2014), Da próxima vez eu fazia tudo diferente, Pivô, São Paulo (2012), Rumos Visuais Itaú Cultural, São Paulo (2012), Mythologies, Cité Internationale des des Arts, Paris (2011), 7a Bienal de Artes Visuais do Mercosul, Porto Alegre (2009), Constructing Views, New Museum, Nova York (2010).
