Mariellen Kuma is a trans travesti artist, curator, and researcher based in Manaus, Amazonas. Her practice spans theater, performance, audiovisual work, literature, and community-based initiatives, investigating the relationships between memory, gender, territory, and social justice. She holds a degree in Biology from the Federal University of Paraná, a master’s degree in Botany from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and a PhD in Genetics and Conservation from INPA. For twelve years, she worked with riverside communities, conducting research in ethnobotany, human ecology, and biodiversity conservation. In 2020, she began her gender transition, and Kuma Yoga, a space dedicated to her yoga and Thai massage classes, became KUMA Espaço de Criação, an organization focused on strengthening trans artists, artists with disabilities, and racialized artists in the Amazon.
