Mãe Cida de Nanã

lives and works at Salvador

Maria Aparecida Santos, known as Mãe Cida de Nanã, is a cultural reference whose trajectory brings together ancestry, religiosity, and traditional Afro-Brazilian practices. A baiana de acarajé since the age of 22, she has practiced this craft for 32 years, establishing a body of work that stands as an expression of identity and resistance.

Iyalorixá of Ilê Axé Opô Iyá Detá, Mãe Cida plays a central role in the stewardship and preservation of sacred knowledge, reaffirming her commitment to the continuity of African-derived traditions. Descended from a lineage of great historical and symbolic significance, she is the great-granddaughter of Mãe Senhora (Oxum Muiwa), granddaughter of Mestre Didi, daughter of Nídia Maria (Iyá Detá), and a filha de santo of Mãe Stella de Oxóssi. Her personal formation is deeply connected to Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá, a fundamental territory for the preservation and transmission of African-derived knowledge in Brazil.
