1998, lives and works at Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
Matheus Freitas is a visual artist whose practice moves between sculpture, design, jewelry, photography, and poetry, with iron as both material and metaphor. He learned blacksmithing from artisans in the Recôncavo Baiano, transforming popular and ancestral techniques into a contemporary poetic language.
His work weaves memory, spirituality, and critique of the violences that shape peripheral contexts, always in dialogue with territory. This connection unfolds in his investigative methodology, Studies of Forms, which traces the repetition of cultural, architectural, and urban symbols, as well as everyday gestures, revealing them as matter for creation. The body, in a state of enchantment, emerges as a central element in this process, where time, tradition, experimentation, and insubmission converge as gestures for reimagining the future.
Freitas has participated in exhibitions such as Plataforma Grão (Santo Amaro, 2022), Imagem e Semelhança (Museu do Recolhimento dos Humildes, 2023 — acquisition prize at the 67th Bahia Visual Arts Salon, 2024), and Quem Viaja Arrisca (Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, 2025). He held a solo exhibition at Casa Preta Hub during Flica (Cachoeira, 2024) and took part in group shows such as Bacia Metal (Salvador, 2024) and Recôncavo Afro Festival (Salvador, 2024). He created the crown featured on the cover of Sued Nunes’s album Eixo and, in 2025, produced a monumental reinterpretation of the crown of Nossa Senhora da Purificação (Santo Amaro) and presented the work Ordem e Reverso at Casa Cor (Salvador).
