Nicanor Aráoz

1981, Buenos Aires

Since its inception in the 2000s, Nicanor Aráoz’s work has been deployed through objects, installations and sculptures. Visual association processes are the main methodology of his work. It thus states an interest in the mixture of discredited cultural products – comic, pornography, Victorian imaginary, pop orientalism, spiritualism, internet, red press – along with a sculptural investigation of the resistance of the bodies. He participated in the Universidade Di Tella Artists’ Program in 2010, in the fifth edition of the Kuitca Scholarship in 2011 and at the International Residency Program of the ISCP in New York in 2017. Some of his last solo show are “Placenta escarlata”, Barro Arte Contemporáneo, Buenos Aires, 2018; “Because I’m never what I have”, Emily Harvey Foundation, New York, 2017; “Antología genética”, Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, 2016. He has also exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, La Tabacalera in Madrid and Castello Di Rivoli in Turin, among others. In 2016, Mansalva editorial published the book Nicanor Aráoz: Genetic anthology, edited by Inés Katzenstein, Alejo Ponce de León and Lucrecia Palacios, with essays by Guillermo Kuitca, Roque Larraquy, Cora Gamarnik, among others.
