Pélagie Gbaguidi

1965, lives and works at Brussels, Belgium

Pélagie Gbaguidi articulates the social and symbolic currents of the colonial and post-colonial legacy, processing the meanings of trauma through materially embodied images. In her paintings and drawings, the artist creates a choreography in vivid, blurred pigments, with the space contested by overlapping bodies and silhouettes. The tense confrontations between abstract demarcation and figurative reference reproduce clashes between recognition and estrangement.

The artist describes herself as a contemporary griot – a storyteller from West Africa, redefining the dimension of orality in traditional heritage through her own artistic approach.

Recently, she has had solo exhibitions at La Verrière/Fondation Hermès in Brussels (2025), Musée Rochechouart in Rochechouart (2024), Goodman Gallery in Cape Town (2024), Mimosa House in London (2023), and Gallery Zeno X in Antwerp (2022). Her work has been featured in major exhibitions such as the Berlin Biennale (2020), documenta 14 (2017), the Lubumbashi Biennale (2019), and several editions of the Dakar Biennale (2004, 2006, 2008, 2014, and 2018).

Her work has also been shown at the Centre Pompidou in Metz, Kunstmuseum Basel, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, WIELS in Brussels, SESC Pompeia in São Paulo, Stadtmuseum Munich, MMK Frankfurt, Middelheim Museum in Antwerp, National Museum of African Art – Smithsonian Institution in Washington, among others.
