1985, lives and works at Berlin, Germany
Saverio Cantoni (b. 1985, pronouns they/them) is a cyborg artist and oral deaf individual based in Berlin. Situating their practice in the sonic space, from tactile experiences to assistive technologies and self-training, Saverio has experimented with interferences, noise, and glitches over the past ten years to create participatory and accessible performances. In a continuous exploration of the “aesthetics of access,” Saverio’s practice employs multiple materials as a way to enable different points of access to similar narratives. As an active participant in the Sickness Affinity Group (SAG), a group of art workers and activists who work with the theme of sickness/disability and/or are affected by it, Saverio also founded Density Around Void, an accessible art collective.
Saverio’s artistic practice is rooted in countering ability as a norm with an intersectional approach, building counter-narratives to address its internalization in society. Scientific investigation, speculative fictions, and mythologies are equally significant to their understanding of social and environmental justice, celebrating non-exclusively human dimensions and rejecting traditional media organizations and techniques in art to counter normative expectations of functionality and productivity. Working through the lenses of crip theory, queer theory, and disobedient archives, Saverio’s practice aims to destabilize existing power structures and rethink normative understandings of sensory experiences.
