Born in Brazil and having been based in The Netherlands for the past decade, Vita Evangelista works with video, digital media, writing and performance. Considering counter-hegemonic, transfeminist and embodied knowledges, Vita reclaims different technologies and languages of representation that characterize the current configuration of the world we inhabit. Attending to the extent to which subjectivities are mediated, they search for intuitive possibilities of creating auto-techno-poetic narratives that could challenge the dominant views of control and surveillance of the human body.
Supplementing their practice by performing in the context of the artworks of their kin, Vita enjoys the collaborative reimagination of what it could mean to exist not in isolation but in relation to-.
Vita holds a BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and an MFA & Critical Studies from the Sandberg Instituut. In the last five years, Vita’s works have been exhibited and performed in different Dutch contexts, including the Stedelijk Museum, the Eye Filmmuseum, Frascati Theater, W139, Brakke Grond, Niewe Vide, Korzo Theater, Lost & Found, De School, Neus Gallery, Perdu, Kunstpodium T, Josilda da Conceição Gallery, Art Chapel, DordtYart, and the Gemeente Amsterdam. Vita also participated in group shows at Galeria Cavalo, Fosso and UFF, in Brazil; as well as in Germany, France, Belgium, and in Liverpool, the UK, where they had their first solo show.
Part of their art practice, Vita’s writings have been published by platforms for arts, culture, and critical writing, including the Dutch magazines Simulacrum, NXS, and Damn, and the bilingual Canadian journal Cigale. They have also been invited to speak at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (NecRomances, Audiovisual department), at Filmhuis Cavia and BAK — basis voor actuele kunst (2.Dh5 Festival), in The Netherlands.
