The Instituto Moreira Salles, in an unprecedented partnership with Pivô – a non-profit cultural association based in Copan, São Paulo – will present, starting April 1st, the exhibition Between Us: Ten Years of the ZUM/IMS Grant, featuring works by artists and collectives who have been awarded the grant for contemporary production over the past decade.
The exhibition is curated by Thyago Nogueira, coordinator of the contemporary photography department at IMS, Daniele Queiroz, assistant curator at IMS, and Ângelo Manjabosco, researcher at IMS. Ana Carla Soler provides curatorial assistance. The works in the exhibition, many of them unpublished, are part of the Moreira Salles Institute’s collection and will be presented together for the first time.
The exhibition will occupy the first floor of Pivô. Around 250 works will be presented, including photographs, videos, installations, and other media. A large part of the works in the exhibition stems from personal stories and issues, addressing broader themes of visual, social, and political representation in the country.
Launched in 2013 as an extension of the activities promoted by the ZUM magazine, published semi-annually by the Moreira Salles Institute, the grant awards two new projects annually, created by Brazilian or foreign artists living in Brazil. Its goal is to enable artists and photographers to deepen their visual production across a variety of approaches, themes, and media. The grant is intended for the development of the project and the production of the work, part of which is incorporated into the IMS Collection.
The exhibition is the result of an unprecedented partnership between the Moreira Salles Institute and Pivô, an artistic exchange and experimentation platform that, since 2012, has offered one of the most attentive independent programs to artistic practices among new generations of Brazilian and international art, from its space in the Copan building in downtown São Paulo.
For the first time, the collection built by IMS through the ZUM/IMS Grant over the last decade is being presented extensively in dialogue and contrast with the unique characteristics of a space like Pivô. This creates a synergy between the objectives and strategies of two institutions, converging in the presentation of an anthology of the ZUM/IMS Grant’s history and of the youngest Brazilian art scene of the past decade, in a joint gesture that expands the possibilities for its understanding through the artistic, social, and political questions raised by the works presented.
The Instituto Moreira Salles,, in partnership with Pivô, presents the exhibition 10 years of ZUM Grant, with works by artists and collectives contemplated by the grant to foster contemporary production created by the IMS in 2013.
Scheduled to open on April 1, 2023, the show will be held at Pivô, São Paulo, also celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The group show, which inaugurates the partnership between the two institutions, will bring together new works in photography, video, and other media to offer an overview of the art produced in Brazil in recent years. Most of the works deal with personal stories as a starting point for thinking about social and political issues in the country. The works in the exhibition present reflections on the history of slavery, transatlantic immigration, racism, social and gender roles, the limits of madness, pop culture, access to cities, utopias, and dystopias.
The exhibition will present works by Aleta Valente, Aline Motta, Bárbara Wagner, Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Coletivo Garapa, Coletivo Trema, Dias & Riedweg, Dora Longo Bahia, Eustáquio Neves, Célia Tupinambá, Helena Martins-Costa, Igi Ayedun, João Castilho, Letícia Ramos, Rafael BQueer, Sofia Borges, Tatewaki Nio, Tiago Sant’Ana, Val Souza and Vijai Patchinelaam. The curators are Thyago Nogueira, Daniele Queiroz and Ângelo Manjabosco. The works in the exhibition belong to the Contemporary Collection of the Moreira Salles Institute.
