Question Centre @ Pivô Welcomes
21/02 - 28/02/15

Pivô Welcomes receives its first project of 2015. This program presents external projects previously formatted by artists, curators or researchers that are aligned with the institution’s concept. Curated by Maria do Carmo Pontes, Question Center platform will be on view at Pivô for one week, between the 21st and 28th of February.

Question Centre is a nomadic platform of short-term exhibitions which hinges generational bonds among artists, making use of both conventional and unconventional art spaces. The idea is to present fresh works by a contemporary practitioner alongside a piece by an artist from a previous generation (active or historic), conceived the year the younger was born. Such piece may be an artwork, a scientific essay or any other item that offers an insight into the experimental production at the year of birth of a certain artist. This ‘obstruction’ aims to both contextualise a present day practice within historical perspective and play with a general obsession about age – omnipresent in the artistic environment – thus raising questions concerning generation and context

The platform borrows its title from James Lee Byars’ The World Question Center (1969), exhibited on its first edition (at Supplement Gallery, London, in June 2014), together with works by Alexandre da Cunha. At Pivô, Question Centre presents work by Marcius Galan (Indianapolis, 1972) in relation to an artwork by Antonio Dias (Campina Grande, Brazil, 1944).
