PIVÔ RESIDENCY: Diogo da Cruz and Fallon Mayanja
PIVÔ RESIDENCY: Diogo da Cruz and Fallon Mayanja

Through cooperation between Salta Art and Pivô, Portuguese artist Diogo da Cruz, based in Lisbon and Munich and currently in residence at Pivô São Paulo, landed at Pivô Salvador on October 6 for a twelve-day period of research and artistic production. The residency is in collaboration with Fallon Mayanja, a French sound artist and performer with whom Diogo has been working in recent years on creating sculptures and sound performances inspired by dialogues on the memory of colonial history and unsustainable extraction of natural resources. After the period in Salvador, both artists will return to Pivô São Paulo to continue and finalize the residency in Brazil.

Together with Pivô, both in São Paulo and Salvador, Diogo and Fallon embark on a new phase of the audiovisual project AXECIDYR, a science fiction series that establishes a connection between the Afrofuturist legend of the Drexciya civilization and the complex challenges of deep-sea mining. While the first two episodes were filmed in Europe and the Azores Archipelago, the third episode aims to shift the focus to the coast of Brazil, specifically exploring the history of colonial crimes and current initiatives for natural resource extraction that mirror historical violence.

Diogo da Cruz

Diogo da Cruz is an artist based in Munich and Lisbon. His practice relies on the use of technologies to imitate, re-articulate or re-imagine unchallenged structures and systems in western society. He works on long-term projects that are driven by partially fictive scenarios. These fictive scenarios are often produced from scientific findings and historical documents referring to past, present or future socio-political circumstances, materialising itself as installations, sculptural and video work.

He received a BA in Sculpture from the FBAUL (2013) and a Diploma in Sculpture from the ADBK München (2016). He participated in the Independent Study Programme at Maumaus – Escola de Artes Visuais in Lisbon (2016).
His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions in Europe, Russia and Uruguay, including the solo exhibitions: “A shot in the dark nights of absence” TUM Physics Department Munich 2023, “our water will meet” Walk&Talk Azores 2022, “looking up from underneath” Forum Arte Braga 2021, “Wisdom Warriors”
Ruine München – Various Others Munich 2019 and group exhibitions in institutions such as: S1 ARTSPACE United Kingdom 2023, arthereistanbul in Turkey 2021, Serralves Museum in Porto 2019 and Espacio de Arte Contemporáne in Montevideo-Uruguay 2019. Da Cruz is assistant professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 2018.

Fallon Mayanja

Sound artist and performer.

Constructing listening environments is the main gesture that defines Fallon’s practice and research. With a broad understanding of listening that encompasses the porosity of touch and the intangibility of sight, Fallon mobilizes different relationships with our environment and social ideas, interrelational and self-reflective. The Listening Zone momentarily departs from common sense by carving out a sound space as a “committed act of relationship, interaction, within its ecosystem”. Reconfiguring the hierarchies of meaning and feeling, the soundscape opens up and announces a collective space of affection, f(r)iction and perception.

Participated in the artistic residency at Pivô Salvador.
