Maura Grimaldi works between academic research and artistic practice whose work mostly addresses themes related to obsolete technologies — from experimentation with different optical devices — to reflect on the economy of attention and forms of subjectivation in contemporary times.
Maura is a non-binary sapatão born in São Paulo (Brazil). They completed their undergraduate and master’s degrees in the field of Visual Arts at the University of São Paulo. It was still in the early years of their training that they began to develop their first artistic projects.
Among their main projects are the artistic residency in Geneva as part of the grant offered by the Pro Helvetia / COINCIDENCIA South America / Swiss Art Council (Switzerland, 2021), the show “The work appering in your memory is not mine” at Galeria Virgílio (Brazil, 2018); the Independent Study Program of Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo – PIMASPcoordinated by Adriano Pedrosa and Tobi Maier (Brazil, 2016/2017); the residency HANGAR in Lisbon (Portugal, 2017); PIVÔ Research program (Brazil, 2017); 6th edition of the Pampulha’s Grant Program (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 2016).; 11th Red Bull Station Artistic Residency (Brazil, 2015); artistic residency at Center of Art and Technology JACA, Belo Horizonte (Brazil, 2014); the exhibition A vanguarda está em ti in the ocassion of 55th year of the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (Portugal, 2014); artistic residency at École Superieure de Beaux Arts, Tours, (France, 2013); I Mostra do Programa de Fotografia 2012/2013 in the Centro Cultural São Paulo (Brazil, 2012); exhibition Corners at Museum of Contemporary Art of São Paulo (Brazil, 2012).
Currently, Maura is developing a PhD in Lisbon, Portugal, related to studies of projected still images and also continues with projects related to the Micro Center for Studies in Projections.
